Spelling Bee

One of our last projects as volunteers has been coordinating and judging a highschool spelling bee...in English! The students from the aldeas of Los Laureles and El Bijau participated, along with two of our teacher friends as facilitators.

Categories for the students were: (in English) Days of the week, colors, Months of the year, Fruits, and numbers 0-100.

We spent a week narrowing it down to 8 contestants. These 8 kids were so nervous when we saw them and as one of the girls told me,

¨Estudiè por toda anoche y cuando me levantè estudiè mas!¨( I studied all last night and when I woke up I just studied some more!)

Well, it was a good thing she did, because she ended up taking 2nd place. First they had to write the word on paper, then write it on the board, and then deletrearlo (spell it out). Thats alot of work for these guys.
