First and Foremost, everything is totally fine in Las Vegas. As we went to sleep on Monday night, weather reports had it on good authority that Felix was going to decrease in force and wind speed by the time it made landfall in Nicaragua and Honduras, and would follow a common path into the Honduran Bay Islands and towards Belize.
Tuesday morning brought different and slightly startling news: Felix was back to Category 5 and taking the same path that Mitch did in 1998, which did incredible damage to Honduras. This path also had it projected to pass over our house. We watched and waited all day Tuesday, with that same mixture of fear and anticipation that only severe weather can create, and nothing happened. Truth be told, we received less rain on Tuesday and Wednesday than we would have on any other average day during Honduras´ rainy season.
Phone calls from friends and family from the states came and went, but no hurricane. Due to the mountainous landscape and the slow pace of the storm, it broke up into a tropical depression before it even reached our side of the country. It did manage to destroy a great deal of homes and lives of indigenous populations of the Mosquito Coast in Eastern Honduras and Western Nicaragua, but generally speaking disaster was diverted.
Other than that, we are pretty busy getting some marching bands ready for a competition next week, we’ll be sure to post some pics soon!
We´re getting so close to coming home we can almost taste it!
